Among those cited, fishing eel, rainbow trout, common trout, barbel, loina, sea bass, mullet and plaice is allowed. The river Lea is an official salmon fishing reserve, and the fishing season extends from March the 18th to July the 31st in the free stretches and the stretches for harmless fishing. In the Aulesti II reserve, on the other hand, the season extends from March the 18th to August the 31st.

Fishing is banned in the following areas:

There are also banned areas. These are zones where fish reproduce and where the fry live, and for this reason they must be protected.

  • - Aulesti: Nabarriz and Errekasti brooks.
  • - Gizaburuaga: Urgitxi brook.
  • - Amoroto: Ballastegi brook, from its source to Ikan farm.

Added to this, fishing is not allowed in the upper stretches of the rivers and brooks.

Reserves for harmless fishing:

There are two normal or free fishing reserves in the river: Aulesti I and Aulesti II. There is also a reserve for harmless fishing. it is in Munitibar, between the Garro reservoir and the “house of the Englishman”. Here we will mostly find common trout, and fishing is not allowed on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Otherwise, fishing is allowed from 8 a.m. till the evening. Four permits are given each day, and only fly fishing is allowed.

  • - Aulesti I: it extends from the reservoir in Beheko mill in Aulesti to the old fishermen shelter (in the San Anton neighbourhood of Aulesti), and the common trout is the main species to be found. Fishing is banned on Wednesdays and Thursdays, and otherwise it is allowed from 8 a.m. till the evening. Six permits are given every day, and each angler can fish up to 6 common trout (over 22 cms. long). It is essential to have a fishing licence and a permit given by the administration.
  • - Aulesti II: it extends from the old fishermen shelter in San Anton to Errotabarri in Amoroto, and includes the towns of Aulesti, Gizaburuaga and Amoroto. The great rainbow trout and the common trout are the predominant species here, and fishing is not allowed on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Seven permits are given each day, and one rainbow trout and six common trouts can be fished. Fishing hours are between 8 a.m. and the evening, and as in all reserves it is essential to have a licence plus the administration´s permit.
  • - Free Fishing: anglers must carry an up-to-date licence and their ID, and they are allowed to fish on the stretches that are not reserves and where fishing is not banned. On these stretches fishing is allowed every day except on Tuesdays.

* Note: Young salmon (Salmo salar). We must warn that fishing this species is strictly forbidden. Besides having a small size, salmon disappeared a long time ago in Bizkaia and the river Lea, and the Department of Agriculture is trying to recuperate it. Therefore, in order to achieve this goal it is essential to respect this fish.
